Just want to share with you these terribly amazing shots after Sandy! Not easy to experience a blacked- out New York ! Almost a mission impossible! We can find whatever smart lighting solutions..but when Mother Nature decides to overcome any human power..well..we already know the fight's result.

Avevo il desiderio di condividere con voi questi terribili ma allo stesso tempo affascinanti  scatti dopo il passaggio dell'uragano Sandy. Non è per niente facile provare l'esperienza di vivere una New York così al buio! Quasi una missione impossibile! Quasi perchè nonostante tentiamo di trovare soluzioni luminose intelligenti, quando Madre Natura decide di avere la meglio..il risultato della battaglia è scontato..!

I am posting an abstract from an article,written by Alyn Griffiths from London published in Architonic Newsletter. You can read the whole article here and see the marvellous projects as well. 

I have chosen the passage where he talks about High Line developments in New York city simply because I was there last year and I found the place really amazing : Nature incapsulated in the urban public space and places showing the esprit of pure design where you can sit and relax, surronded by different styles of typical american buildings. But let's talk the author : "Finding new spaces in towns and cities that can be turned into communal parks is extremely difficult with every available plot in such high demand and so, as with many other aspects of urban development, the reuse or re-appropriation of existing land has become a popular alternative. The shining example of this practice is New York’s hugely popular High Line development, which has converted a disused freight rail line elevated above the streets of Manhattan into a popular park and walkway. Designs were recently unveiled for the third and final section of the High Line, which will wrap around the Hudson Yards, an active train yard for Long Island Rail Road.Their collaboration with planting designer Piet Oudolf on the initial two sections of the High Line resulted in a variety of environments along the rail line’s route, ranging from areas of grassland to sun decks with landscaped water features and a raised walkway that lifts visitors into the canopy of trees planted on the bed of the structure below. The proposal for Section 3 has been carefully coordinated with an ongoing development of the Hudson Yards, which will ultimately host more than 12 million square feet of offices, residential, retail and cultural venues. The design includes a public plaza where the park crosses 11th Avenue at West 30th Street, with large planted beds interspersed with areas of seating and a play area for kids created by covering the original structural beams and girders with a thick and colourful rubber coating. The final section of the High Line is due to open in early 2014 and will complete the most ambitious and significant urban park of the 21st Century. "

Ho scelto il passo in cui  l'autore parla della High Line di New York semplicemente perché ci sono stata l'anno scorso e ho trovato il posto davvero sorprendente: pezzi di natura incapsulati nello spazio pubblico urbano e luoghi  dove ci si può sedere e rilassare che traspirano puro design, , circondati dai diversi stili di tipici edifici americani. Ma lasciamo parlare l'autore:

"Trovare nuovi spazi in città che possono essere trasformati in parchi comunali è estremamente difficile con l'alta domanda  di terreni disponibili e così, come per molti altri aspetti dello sviluppo urbano, il riutilizzo o la riappropriazione della terra esistente sono diventati una valida alternativa. Il fulgido esempio di questa prassi è la New York High Line, che ha trasformato una linea merci su rotaia sopraelevata  in disuso sopra le strade di Manhattan in un parco popolare.

Sono stati recentemente presentati dei progetti  per la terza e ultima sezione della High Line, che circondano le Hudson Yards, uno scalo ferroviario attivo per la Long Island Rail Road. La  collaborazione con Piet Oudolf per le prime due sezioni della High Line ha realizzato una varietà di ambienti lungo la linea ferroviaria, che vanno da aree verdi a ponti assolati con giochi d'acqua, attraverso un camminamento sopraelevato circondato da alberi e piante di vario genere.

La proposta per la sezione 3 è stata accuratamente coordinata sviluppando con continuità gli  Hudson Yards, e alla fine ospiterà più di 12 milioni di metri quadrati di uffici, luoghi residenziali, commerciali e culturali. Il progetto prevede una piazza pubblica in cui il parco attraversa la 11ma alla  30ma Strada West, con le grandi aiuole intervallate da aree di posti a sedere e un'area giochi per bambini creati dalla copertura delle travi originali  strutturali e con un rivestimento in gomma spessa e colorata. L'apertura dell'ultima sezione della High Line è prevista nei primi mesi del 2014 e completerà il parco più ambizioso e significativo urbano del XXI secolo."

My dear friend in New York took these shots just for me from a shop window : these are lighting fixtures out of the creativity of Lindsey Adelman, a talented New York designer, able to mix and match traditional mouth-blown glass bubble together with the latest LED technology. Visiting her web site and blog, I could realize that she will present her collection at VENTURALAMBRATE, which has become an important meeting point for worldwide extremely selected young designers during the SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE in Milano from 12 to 17th April. Amazing,isn't it ?!

Il mio carissimo amico di New York ha scattato per me queste istantanee dalla vetrina di un negozio : sono lampade scaturite dalla creatività di Lindsey Adelman, una geniale design newyorkese, capace di fondere sfere di vetro soffiato a mano con la nuova tecnologia LED. Visitando il suo sito e blog, sono venuta a conoscenza che presenterà la sua collezione a VENTURALAMBRATE, un importante punto di ritrovo di selezionatissimi esordienti designer a livello mondiale durante il SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE di Milano dal 12 al 17 aprile. Pink Street Lamp

I wonder why the street light is pink painted...the artist would just catch the eye or because we are already used to black street lamps?? Interesting contrast. Deformed and grey human bodies and inbetween a pink colour touch..Upside down world..
