Sulle note musicali di Hans Zimmer e Lisa Gerrard del famoso film " Il Gladiatore" mi sono lasciata ispirare per scrivere queste poche righe e per la scelta di questa foto, scattata un anno fa ad "architect@at work", evento dedicato ai produttori di materiali, manufatti per progetti d'architettura. Poco più di un anno dopo, il mondo intero non è più lo stesso e non lo sarà più come prima. Ma, come la luce illumina sempre le zone buie, così anche un momento così difficile illuminerà noi esseri umani per comportamenti più consapevoli. Ne sono convinta. C'è chi ha pagato, paga e pagherà un prezzo molto alto, ma i sopravvissuti sapranno fare tesoro ed evolveranno. Ce la faremo. Andrà tutto bene. L'opera descritta in foto è di Alessandra Aita ed è estremamente evocativa..un uomo che affoga ? Si sta ritirando in se stesso ? Ma c'è dietro di lui, l'altro uomo, pronto ad aiutarlo con la propria energia luminosa. Non sappiamo il finale:  sta a noi trovare l'alternativa, la soluzione, prima che sia davvero troppo tardi. Il materiale utilizzato per queste installazioni è il legno : tanti piccoli rametti in legno che compongono le sculture. Un rimando all'indissolubile rapporto UOMO- NATURA, da amare, rispettare e ritrovare il giusto equilibrio.

On the musical notes of Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard of the famous movie "The Gladiator" I have been inspired to write these few words and to choose this photo, taken a year ago at "architect @ at work", an event dedicated to manufacturers of materials and artifacts for architectural projects. Just  a year later, the whole world is no longer the same and will never be the same again. But, as light always illuminates dark areas, so even a difficult moment will illuminate human beings for a more conscious behavior. I am convinced about it. There are those who have paid and will pay a very high price, but the survivors will learn and evolve. We'll make it. Everything will be fine. The work described in the photo is by Alessandra Aita and is extremely evocative... a man drowning ? Is he retreating into himself? But behind him, the other man is ready to help him with his own light energy. We don't know the ending: it's up to us to find the alternative, the solution, before it's really too late. The material used for these installations is wood: many small wooden twigs, making up the sculptures. A reference to the indissoluble HUMAN-NATURE relationship, to love, respect and find the right balance.

"Aria e luce sono i materiali da costruzione" : così amava ripetere Franco Albini, architetto del periodo razionalista italiano ( anni '30-'40). Definito razionalista, in quanto persona rigorosa,austera, che certamente seguì un metodo preciso : quello di smontare e ricomporre tante volte qualsiasi oggetto, dal posacenere ad una scala. Non parlava mai di principi teorici, ricorda il figlio Marco, nemmeno ai tanti suoi studenti, perché credeva fermamente nei principi pragmatici del provare e riprovare, appunto. In fondo a quella sua aria austera, si nascondeva un afflato poetico, non contenuto nei suoi principi ed  IL VELIERO, una libreria innovativa, non pensata per stare attaccata al muro, ma in mezzo ad una stanza, leggera, tra le cui mensole passano aria e luce, ne è la sua migliore manifestazione. Gli oggetti non devono mostrare il loro peso; così come la bella serie di lampade, prodotte dal 2008 ed ancora oggi, da NEMO (CASSINA LIGHTING Meda). La serie AM/AS con un sofisticato vetro opalino bianco che rende la lampada leggera, nonostante la struttura in metallo. Un razionalista poeta dunque, i cui eredi oggi portano avanti in suo nome la fondazione a lui dedicata.

"Air and light are building materials":Franco Albini, an architect of the Italian rationalist period (1930s-1940s) kept repeating. Defined a rationalist, as a straight forward, severe man, who certainly followed a rigorous method: dismantling and reassembling any object many times, from the ashtray to a staircase. He never spoke of theoretical principles, remembers his son Marco, not even to his many students, because he firmly believed in the pragmatic principles of trying over and over again. But deeply in his soul, a poetic inspiration was hidden, not contained in its principles and IL VELIERO, an innovative bookcase, not designed to be stuck to the wall, but in the middle of a room, air and light pass actually thru its shelves; it is his best manifestation. Objects must not show their weight. As well as the beautiful series of lamps, produced since 2008 and still today, by NEMO (CASSINA LIGHTING Meda). The AM / AS series with a sophisticated white opal glass which makes the lamp very light, despite the metal structure. A rationalist poet, then, whose heirs today run the foundation dedicated to him.

EUROLUCE 2019

Il mio Salone del mobile 2019 in pillole..in particolare Euroluce 2019:luci soffuse,colori anni '60,grappoli di luce,vetri leggerissimi, trasparenze e opacità, geometrie led che ricordano Lucio Fontana.

Bravi come sempre quelli del Melogranoblu ( foto grande) e bellissime proposte da Flos ( foto in basso).

A brief Miscellanea from Salone del mobile and Euroluce 2019, taking place in Milano in these days : soft lights, Sixties' tones, light, transparent and opal glass, led sticks on the ceiling and on the walls, reminding me of the great italian artist Lucio Fontana. Glasses (above left in the picture) are from Melogranoblu. Very interesting installlations by Flos ( below in the picture)

CONVIVIANDO - L'arte della tavola

La mise en place come scenografia dell'essere, rappresentazione di sé e della società, gioco perpetuo tra arte e idealità. È il tema ispiratore della bella mostra CONVIVIANDO tenutasi recentemente a Palazzo Reale, Milano,esplorato attraverso oltre tre secoli di storia e una serie di film che hanno segnato il nostro immaginario, quali COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY del 2009 o VATEL del 2000. L'illuminazione a tavola gioca un ruolo fondamentale e nei vari percorsi della mostra s'intuisce l'utilizzo delle varie fonti luminose nel passare dei secoli : nel periodo Barocco tutto era preparato per stupire e si usavano metalli preziosi, come i candelabri in argento. Nel Settecento si passa a materiali quali la porcellana, per poi arrivare via via agli anni Ruggenti,riferendosi al film IL GRANDE GATSBY del 2013 col ritorno del candelabro, però con scopo meramente decorativo. Oggi si parla di avere una luce corretta a tavola per rendere l'esperienza culinaria ancora più appagante e soddisfacente.La mostra termina in un ambiente futuristico total white,ispirandosi al film EX MACHINA del 2014 in cui la luce la fa da padrona e...a noi rimangono solo pillole di cibo....alimentazione essenziale, esaltata da una esasperata ricerca estetica. Sarà davvero così ?

The mise en place as a stage for being, a representation of the self and society, an endless game of art and dream. This is the main theme of the interesting exhibition CONVIVIANDO, held at Palazzo Reale, Milano,explored thru more than three centuries of history and a series of movies that have left a mark in our imagination, as COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY (2009) or VATEL (2000).

Lighting plays a fundamental role on the table and in the various exhibition's stages we can understand the use of various light sources over the centuries: in the Baroque period everything was prepared for amusement and precious metals were used, such as silver candlesticks. In the eighteenth century porcelain was the most precious material, and then gradually to the Roaring years, referring to the THE GREAT GATSBY of 2013 with the return of the candlestick, but with just a decorative purpose. Today we talk about having a proper light at the table to make the culinary experience even more satisfying. The exhibition ends in a futuristic total white room, inspired by the film EX MACHINA of 2014 in which light is the master and .. food is in pills .... essential and exalted by an exasperated aesthetic research. Will it  be really like that?

Lucio Fontana - Pirelli Hangar Bicocca

Ambiente spaziale a luce nera 1948-1949 by Lucio Fontana

La bella mostra " Ambienti" dedicata a Lucio Fontana presso Pirelli Hangar Bicocca,Milano sta per volgere al termine. Lucio Fontana ( 1899-1968) è conosciuto a livello planetario come uno dei maggiori innovatori dell'arte del XX secolo, la cui influenza e originalità continua ancora oggi. Affascinato dal cosmo e dalle nuove frontiere che la scienza stava scoprendo, Fontana investigò sui concetti di  materia,spazio, luce e vuoto, usando nelle sue opere diversi materiali per espandere i confini dell'arte. Difatti, entrando nei vari ambienti, ricreati nella mostra, si viene catapultati in luoghi atemporali, che potrebbero essere stati pensati da un artista contemporaneo. Le installazioni invece risalgono a 70 anni fa. La mia preferita è "Ambiente Spaziale a luce nera 1948-1949", con la quale Fontana mette in pratica le sue teorie innovative sviluppate nel suo manifesto sullo Spazialismo alla fine degli anni '40.

The beautiful exhibition "Environments" dedicated to Lucio Fontana at Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, Milano is coming to an end. Lucio Fontana ( 1899-1968) is internationally well known as one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, whose influence and originality continue to resonate today.

Fascinated by the cosmos and thanks to scientific discoveries of his day, Fontana investigated the concepts of material, space,light and void, using in his works widely different materials to expand the boundaries of art. In fact, entering the installations of the exhibition, the feeling is to be in places, thought by a contemporary artist.On the contrary the installations are 70 years old! My favourite is "Ambiente Spaziale a luce nera 1948-1949", with which Fontana applied the most innovative theories he had developed in his manifestos of Spatialism, published at the end of the 1940s.

Ghilli Antichità, Milano

GHILLI chandeliers at Rifugio Delicatessen, Milano

Prima che iniziasse Expo 2015, mi sono domandata più volte come realizzare un connubio tra cibo e luce e se questo avesse un senso. Tra le varie mostre sul cibo in questi mesi a Milano, una delle più belle, a mio avviso, è Lumièra, organizzata da Ghilli Antichità in collaborazione con il Rifugio Delicatessen. Una sfida, diciamo così, parlando con l'Arch. Isabella Giovanella, titolare insieme al marito, l'Arch.Paolo Giovanella e la cognata Sabrina, di Ghilli Antichità. All'inizio del progetto, aleggiava un leggero scetticismo : se i bei lampadari in cristallo d'epoca, si sarebbero ben inseriti in un ambiente rustico come quello del Rifugio Delicatessen. Invece i risultati sono stati straordinari : una luce calda ma allo stesso tempo brillante. Sono stati scelti lampadari non troppo "importanti" poiché il soffitto è basso, illuminati con lampadine da 3 w ciascuna, proprio per evitare l'effetto "showroom". L'inaugurazione della mostra Lumièra è stata davvero bella ! Molta gente, ottimi spuntini a base di pane di segale, speck, formaggi, risotto alla mela e speck con ottimi vini ed aperitivi. Ecco che allora un connubio è possibile : la ristorazione di un ottimo livello,illuminata da lampadari senza tempo.  Lumièra sarà aperta fino al 3 novembre 2015- Tutti i giorni dalle ore 12.00 alle ore 23.00. Una selezione di lumiere d'epoca sarà inoltre visionabile presso Ghilli Antichità dalle 9 alle 12.30 e dalle 15.00 alle 19.00, in via Ampère, 55, Milano.

Un'ottima ragione per fare un salto al rifugio sotto una luce d'altri tempi !

Before Expo 2015, I wondered several times the way to combine food with light and if this could make sense. Among the various recent exhibitions about food  in Milan, one of the best, in my opinion, is Lumièra, organized by Ghilli Antichità in co-operation with Rifugio Delicatessen. A challenge, talking with Arch. Isabella Giovanella, owner with her husband, Arch.Paolo Giovanella and her sister in law Sabrina,of Ghilli Antichità. At the beginning of the project, they were slightly skeptic: will  the beautiful vintage crystal chandeliers fit in a rustic set like the one of Rifugio Delicatessen ? However, the results have been extraordinary: a warm light but at the same time brilliant. They chose small chandeliers because the ceiling is low, illuminated with  3 w bulbs each,to avoid the "showroom effect". The launch of Lumièra was really great! Crowded, delicious snacks made with rye bread, ham, cheese, risotto with apple and bacon,fine wines and aperitifs. A combination is then possible: high quality food enlightened by timeless chandeliers. 

Lumièra will be open until 3rd November, everyday from 12 pm to 11 pm.  A selection of chandeliers will be available at Ghilli Antichità, from monday to saturday, from 9 am to 12.30 pm/ 3 pm to 7 pm, via Ampère 55, Milano.

Lumièra - La magia dell'Illuminazione nel luogo del pranzo

Lumièra, la magia dell’illuminazione nel luogo del pranzo, è il progetto in collaborazione con Ghilli Antichità, dal 29 settembre al 3 novembre 2015. Il percorso è aperto tutti i giorni al Rifugio Delikatessen dalle ore 12:00 alle 23:00. L'inaugurazione si terrà presso il Rifugio Delikatessen in via Lomazzo,67 a Milano, dalle ore 18 di martedì 29 settembre ed è necessario accreditarsi sul sito www.lumiera-mostra.com entro il 25 settembre. Una selezione di lumiere d’epoca sarà visionabile presso Ghilli Antichità, dove sarà inoltre possibile acquistare tutti i lampadari esposti nelle due location della mostra. (Ghilli Antichità - Via Ampère 55, Milano. Orari: dal lunedì al sabato 9:00 -12:30/15:00-19:00). 

Lumièra apre il percorso espositivo partendo dal concetto di mensa medioevale austera e monacale per proseguire con l’evoluzione del luogo del pranzo, passando dai primitivi lampadari in legno e metallo a quelli più elaborati in ferro e ottone, o in argento, legno dorato e bronzo, con lo sfarzo del cristallo di rocca e del cristallo di piombo fino al lampadario moderno minimalista.

Lumièra - enchanting lighting exhibition 

The show , taking place at Rifugio Delikatessen in co-operation with Ghilli Antichità, from 29th september  to 3rd november   2015, will take the public back to medieval times with examples of wooden luminaires, thru the evolution of technical and aesthetical lighting solutions, up to our modern minimal style.

The exhibition is open from 12 pm to 11 pm at Rifugio Delikatessen, Via Lomazzo, 67 Milano and a section of crystal chandeliers can be seen at Ghilli Antichità, Via Ampère 55,Milano, where it is possible to buy all chandeliers of both locations. Inauguration at 6 pm on 29th september 2015 at Rifugio Delikatessen. It's necessary to register at www.lumiera-mostra.com by 25th September 2015.

Torneria al femminile

Foto dall'archivio  dell’Istituto per la storia del Risorgimento italiano, in collaborazione con l’Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico ICCU. In queste immagini, donne al lavoro su torni manuali presso la BREDA di Sesto S.Giovanni. Durante la grande guerra queste donne erano incaricate alla produzione di materiale bellico. Essendo del settore, so che il lavoro di torneria manuale è molto duro e personalmente ho sempre pensato fosse prettamente maschile. A queste donne tutta la mia ammirazione.

In these pictures ladies at work on manual spinning machines at BREDA in Sesto S.Giovanni, close to Milano. During the 1st world war these ladies were in charge for the production of military metal components. As I know this work quite well, manual spinning is very hard and I have always thought it was traditional male. To these ladies all my personal respect.

Poldi Pezzoli,Milano : Il Magico Accordo

Museo Poldi Pezzoli - Milano - Salone Dorato.

Il 18 marzo 2013 Il Museo Poldi Pezzoli di Milano ha presentato la nuova illuminazione di alcune sale della Casa Museo in collaborazione con lo Studio Ferrara Palladino e Associati.Ospite d'onore il Prof.Philipe Daverio, il quale presenta la luce come un elemento teatrale, che nasce dal teatro stesso e che s'inserisce nel nostro contesto quotidiano,ove sempre più il concetto di notte viene abolito, rendendo così le nostre città sempre più confortevoli e vivibili. Su questo concetto di comfort ha lavorato lo Studio Ferrara Palladino ed Associati, in quanto il Poldi Pezzoli è una CASA MUSEO, dove l'elemento casa è fortemente caratterizzante. Gli altri due elementi su cui i progettisti si sono soffermati sono : la prestazione visiva, cioè dare ai quadri una percezione reale ed anche attuale ( la nostra percezione non è la stessa di quella degli anni '80 per esempio, quando le alogene facevano da padrone un po' ovunque) e la creazione di un "ambiance", di un'atmosfera gradevole per il visitatore. Il progetto quindi si basa sull'equilibrio di questi tre parametri fondamentali, creando un "magico accordo", appunto.

I proiettori delle strutture a braccio sono state posizionate e calibrate singolarmente per ogni opera d'arte. Le strutture sono in fibra di carbonio, leggerissime e i proiettori contengono LED. Con un particolare sistema ideato grazie alla collaborazione con PHILIPS LUMILEDS, si è cercato di raggiungere un analogo effetto luminoso di quello delle sorgenti a filamento, miscelando quattro sorgenti diverse all'interno di ciascun proiettore per ciascuna opera. Un progetto tailor-made veramente molto ben riuscito.

Le strutture in fibra di carbonio sono state prodotte su disegno di Ferrara Palladino e Associati dalla VEGA SRL .Gli apparecchi di illuminazione e il sistema cromatico sono stati realizzati da ILTI LUCE (gruppo PHILIPS) sempre su disegno dello Studio FERRARA PALLADINO E ASSOCIATI. 

I LED utilizzati sono prodotti da PHILIPS LUMILEDS. L'installazione curata dal Sig.Giulio Pastore ( GI-PAS)

On March 18, 2013 Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milano presented the new lighting system of several rooms of the House Museum in collaboration with Studio Ferrara Palladino e Associati. Special guest,Prof.Philipe Daverio, who presented light as a theatrical element that comes from the theatre itself, and that fits in our everyday environment, where more and more the concept of night is abolished, thus making our cities more comfortable and lively. On this concept of comfort has worked Studio Ferrara Palladino e Associati, as the Poldi Pezzoli is a HOUSE MUSEUM, where HOME  is highly distinctive.The other two elements on which designers have focused are: the visual performance, ie giving the paintings a real and current perception (our perception is not the same as that of the '80s for example, when the halogen was even abused everywhere) and the creation of an "ambiance", a pleasant atmosphere for visitors. The project therefore is based on a balance of these three key parameters, creating a "magical balance".

The projectors structures' arms have been positioned and calibrated individually for each masterpiece. The frames are made ​​of carbon fiber, a very light material and projectors contain LED. With a particular system device, thanks to the collaboration with PHILIPS LUMILEDS, it was sought to achieve a similar effect to that of the light source filament, mixing four different sources within each projector for each masterpiece. A tailor-made project ,really well done.

The carbon fiber structures were produced by VEGA SRL and designed by Ferrara Palladino e Associati . Luminaires and color system have been made by ILTI LUCE ( PHILIPS group) always on design of  Studio  FERRARA PALLADINO e ASSOCIATI. 

LED are produced by PHILIPS LUMILEDS. The installation curated by Mr.Giulio Pastore (GI-PAS)

Once it was the Artist's shit..

Poop Lamp by Diana Dumitrescu

In 1961 Piero Manzoni created and produced 90 tins containing his fresh shit. It was of course a strong disapproval against the prevailing art and the concept that whatever an artist produces must be considered a masterpiece. One Artist's shit tin is now at the MUSEO DEL NOVECENTO in Milano. Probably the designer Diana Dumitrescu has been inspired by Manzoni and now she has produced her  lighting "masterpiece". Will you put it on your desk?

Nel 1961 Piero Manzoni creò e produsse 90 barattoli contenenti le proprie feci. Volle essere una forte critica contro l'arte allora predominante e il concetto che qualsiasi cosa un artista avesse prodotto, sarebbe stata considerata un capolavoro. Uno di questi barattoli è ora al MUSEO DEL NOVECENTO di Milano. Probabilmente la designer Diana Dumitrescu si è fatta ispirare da Manzoni ed ha prodotto il suo "capolavoro" luminoso. La metteresti sulla tua scrivania?

Accese le vetrate del Duomo di Milano

Dopo 600 anni il Duomo di Milano riaccende le proprie luci. E lo fa illuminando le vetrate che diventano così simbolo di trasparenza cromatica ed energia.E' il primo duomo al mondo a proporre tale soluzione luminosa. Grazie a 68 lampade a basso impatto ambientale i finestroni artistici splenderanno per tutto il periodo delle feste.

After 600 years the Cathedral in Milano illuminates again. It does so enlighting the stained glass windows which become then a symbol of chromatic transparency and energy. It's the first Cathedral worldwide to propose such a solution. Thanks to 68 energy saving lighting fixtures, the artistic windows will shine during Christmas holidays.

SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE 2010,MILANO

Questa settimana si é concluso il Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2010 a Milano.
La lampada di Venini qui riprodotta ben rappresenta la ricerca continua di nuove forme sulla base di un design comunque pulito e tradizionale.
Come collezionista di bambole, non posso fare altro che plaudere ad un'idea così accattivante..
Il nome della lampada é ESPERANçA in cui si immergono bambole di vetro, designers Humberto e Fernando Campana. Una immersione nella speranza...speranza di un mondo fatto di un'energia più pulita. D'altro canto anche nel mondo illuminotecnico vi é sempre maggiore attenzione al risparmio energetico sino a coloro che supportano l'idea di una GREEN LIGHT, l'evoluzione della luce "ambientalmente corretta".


This week the international furniture show 2010 in Milano has shut its doors. Venini's suspended lamp, here represented, is an excellent example of the never-ending search for new ideas based on a simple and minimal design.
As a dolls' collector I like this lamp very much.. The name of the lamp is ESPERANçA, in which tiny glass and colourful dolls plunge into a white sea made of glass. Designers are Humberto & Fernando Campana. The dolls plunge into a hope...hope for a much more clean world..Also in the lighting field there's more and more attention on the energy saving till the ones who support the concept of GREEN LIGHT : the evolution of light " environmentally correct".
