Lo scorso marzo ho partecipato al convegno organizzato da GEWISS & PHILIPS su nuove soluzioni per l'illuminazione pubblica e l'arredo urbano. In uno scenario in cui i temi del risparmio energetico,dell'efficienza e del risultato applicativo sono oggetto di iniziative legislative e normative a livello nazionale ed internazionale,cogliere le opportunità derivanti dal passaggio dalla luce elettromeccanica a quella elettronica rappresenta il percorso obbligatorio per chi vuole mantenere un ruolo primario sia come fornitore sia come utilizzatore di illuminazione. Molto interessante l'intervento su : il “Patto dei Sindaci”strumento volontario che coinvolge attivamente le città europee nel percorso verso la sostenibilità energetica e ambientale in base al PAES, Piano d’Azione Europeo sull’Efficienza Energetica. Altrettanto interessante si può dire per la scelta di GEWISS di non farsi prendere dalla "frenesia della moda dei LED" proponendo soluzioni con tecnologie alternative in collaborazione con PHILIPS.

Last March I attended a conference organized by GEWISS & PHILIPS about new solutions for public and street lighting.

In times when  the themes about energy saving, efficiency and results' application are the main subject of national and international   legislative and regulatory initiatives, the opportunities given by the transition from electromechanical to electronic light represent  the route for those who want to maintain a key role both as a supplier and a user of lighting. Very interesting the speech on "the Covenant of Mayors". A voluntary tool that actively engages the European cities in the path towards energy and environmental sustainability based on SEAP, the European Action Plan for the energy sustainability.Also interesting GEWISS choice not to get involved totally by "LED fashion", proposing solutions with alternative technologies in collaboration with Philips.All acts of the conference in Cenate Sotto of 23rd March are available to download from the official GEWISS website.

I have officially entered the Golden Age! That's a fact and I couldn't do anything to avoid it or postpone it...Anyway I feel very happy, as I have achieved many goals in life. In a few words : I can't complain! One of the most precious gifts I have received for my 50th birthday is this wonderful bag! It's not a simple bag : it's a WIRE BAG! Ho ufficialmente varcato la soglia della Golden Age! Questo è un dato di fatto e non ho potuto fare nulla per evitarlo o rinviarlo ... Mi ritengo comunque fortunata,in quanto ho raggiunto molti obiettivi nella vita. In poche parole: non mi posso lamentare! Uno dei doni più preziosi che ho ricevuto per il mio 50 ° compleanno è questa splendida borsa! Non è una semplice borsa: è fatta con uno speciale cavo prodotto esclusivamente nel Nord Italia per ANTEPRIMA. In order to continue the topic on LED evolution, I am posting this article, written by  Kay,president and founder of Conservation Lighting International and Building Conservation International. She is a member of the IESNA Board of Directors and is a past member of professional affiliations and societies including IAEI, AIA's Historic Resources Committee, ICOMOS, and International Council on Art Deco Societies. She is a member of the Consulting-Specifying Engineer editorial advisory board. 

The article is very clear for anybody with useful links to more technical data on LED. The author closes the article looking forward to LED & OLED development and some questions any lighting planner should be able to ask himself and his clients.

Per continuare il tema sull'evoluzione del LED, vorrei condividere questo articolo, scritto da Kay, presidente e fondatrice di Conservation Lighting International e Building Conservation International. E 'membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione IESNA  ed è stata membro di affiliazioni  professionali e società tra cui IAEI, AIA Historic Resources Committee , ICOMOS e International Council on Art Deco Societies.E 'membro del comitato consultivo dell'editoriale Consulting-Specifying Engineer. L'articolo è molto chiaro con link utili per ulteriori dati tecnici sui LED. L'autrice chiude l'articolo, certa dei prossimi sviluppi di LED e OLED, formulando alcune domande utili ad ogni lighting designer da porre a sé stesso ed ai suoi clienti.

LUMEN FORTRONIC FORUM

Ho partecipato al Lumen Fortronic Forum tenutosi a Milano lo scorso marzo e ho trovato molto interessanti alcune relazioni che vorrei brevemente riassumere.

Innanzitutto la missione di standardizzazione del Consorzio Zhaga :  l'obiettivo del consorzio è quello di creare standard per rendere intercambiabili i prodotti e la tecnologia LED, in quanto al momento hanno diverse caratteristiche.

La relazione poi di Danilo Paleari,collaboratore della rivista LEDIN, ricercatore e formatore al Politecnico di Milano, del Dipartimento Indaco. Egli sostiene che negli ultimi due anni stiamo vivendo una vera e propria rivoluzione.Dalla sorgente tradizionale si è passati alla sorgente allo stato solido (SSL). Siamo di fronte ad una evoluzione epocale.La tecnologia LED è davvero innovativa e l'efficienza del LED ha un andamento esponenziale rispetto a quello tradizionale che è orizzontale. Nel 2020 egli stima che circa l'80% dell'illuminazione sarà allo stato solido. Nei prossimi dieci anni ci sarà una vera e propria rivoluzione. Il 90% della ricerca fatta dalle aziende è per le sorgenti allo stato solido. Al momento l'offerta SSL è sterminata : come si può scegliere al meglio? Ad oggi c'è molta confusione. La rivoluzione è in atto anche a livello normativo per la misurazione degli apparecchi di illuminazione. Le norme non ce la fanno a stare al passo con la tecnologia. Come si può allora convincere l'utente? Una risposta può essere nei LIGHTING FACTS adottati negli USA : dati per un confronto degli apparecchi LED tra di loro e con gli apparecchi tradizionali. L'Italia può giocare un ruolo importante in questo momento di grande evoluzione con un approccio innovativo al design degli apparecchi. I LED rappresentano una vera sfida per innovare il settore.

L'ultima presentazione alquanto interessante del prof.Forcolini sull'utilizzo dei LED per i beni culturali. I LED, secondo lui, sono flessibili,in riferimento al flusso luminoso ed alla resa dei colori. I LED ben si prestano ad essere usati nei musei per la necessità di rendere invisibile tutta l'impiantistica, poichè i LED possono funzionare in nicchie. Vi è assenza di radiazioni UV ed infrarossi che potrebbero danneggiare i patrimoni culturali di valore.

Interessanti gli esempi dell'altare di S.Giuseppe e di Maria Bambina all'interno del Duomo di Milano e una sala all'interno della Pinacoteca Ambrosiana sempre a Milano, tutti illuminati con tecnologia LED.

I attended the Lumen Fortronic Forum  in Milan last March and I found some very interesting reports that I will briefly summarize.

First, the mission of the Consortium Zhaga for standardization: the Consortium's objective is to create standards to make  LED products and technology interchangeable as, for the time being, they have different characteristics.

In Danilo Paleari's report, contributor to the magazine Ledin, researcher and trainer at the Politecnico of Milano, Department of Indigo he argues that in the last two years we are experiencing a real revolution.From the traditional source we have turned to the source of  solid state lighting (SSL). We are facing a radical change.

LED technology is truly innovative and the efficiency of  LED has an exponential growth compared to the traditional one that is horizontal. In 2020 he estimates that about 80% of lighting will be SSL. Over the next ten years there will be a real revolution. 90% of the research done by the companies is for  the SSL.

At present, the SSL offer is very big: how to choose the best? At the moment there is confusion. The revolution is taking place also in the regulations for the measurement of luminaires. The rules do not  keep pace with technology. So how can we convince the customer?

One answer may be in the LIGHTING FACTS adopted in the USA: a comparison of data for LED devices with each other and with traditional ones. Italy can play an important role in this time of great evolution with an innovative approach to the design. LEDs are a real challenge to innovate the industry.

The last presentation by Prof.Forcolini was about the use of LED for cultural heritage. LED, according to him, are flexible with respect to the luminous flux and color rendering. The LEDs are well suited to be used in museums for the need to make invisible all the systems, since the LEDs can operate in niches. There is no UV and IR radiation that can damage the cultural heritage value.

Interesting examples of the altar of St. Joseph and Maria Bambina inside the Cathedral of Milan and a room inside the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana also in Milan, all illuminated with LED technology.

Durante l'incontro organizzato da APIL il 5 marzo dal titolo PROGETTARE IL PROGETTISTA,mi ha particolarmente colpita l'intervento di Daria Casciani del Politecnico di Milano, Dipartimento Indaco. Il progetto è ILLUMINARE LA CITTA' ATTRAVERSO GLI OCCHI DEI CITTADINI. 

Noi siamo abituati ad una luce urbana non dinamica e che si occupa principalmente di risparmio energetico.Il progetto invece vuole ridefinire la luce urbana rendendola più comunicativa, cioé che si modelli alle necessità delle città che vivono 24h.Con il concetto di urban lighting 2.0 s'intende una luce cittadina  che aiuti la socialità e aumenti il senso di sicurezza delle persone durante le ore notturne.Tutti noi possiamo esprimere la nostra opinione, partecipando a ELSE Experience of Lighting Sustainability in theEnvironment : è un questionario attivo ONLINE, il cui obiettivo è comprendere l'impatto sociale ed esperenziale della luce in città.

During the meeting organized by APIL on 5th of March entitled PROGETTARE IL PROGETTISTA, I was particularly interested in  Daria Casciani's presentation of the Polytechnic of Milan, Department INDACO. The project is ILLUMINATE THE CITY 'THROUGH THE EYES OF CITIZENS.We are accustomed to a  non dynamic urban light,engaged primarily in energy saving. The project instead wants to redefine the urban light, making it more communicative in order to model the needs of the cities, living 24h. The concept of urban lighting 2.0 means lighting  that can  improve the town sociability and increase the sense of personal safety at nightime.Everyone can share his view, attending ELSE  Experience of Lighting Sustainability in the Environment. The questionnaire is active ONLINE, whose goal is to understand the social and experiential impact of light in the city.

Twenty years back, while working in my family's company - an italian manufacturer of metal components for lighting - I started a promotional campaign of new items,called BACK TO THE FUTURE : they were spinned aluminium cones of different shapes and sizes,made with old manual wood spinning tools dated early '60s, found in the "attic" of our company. The campaign had a big success : we reproduced some tools in stainless steel, we manufactured thousands of pieces on a fully authomatic spinning machine and sold them all over the world.

This LED light bulb by PANASONIC reminded me of this lucky episode : a future technology in a very traditional body. I love it.! Panasonic won a Good Design Award 2011 for this new LED light bulb.The new bulb is using just 4.4 watts of power and its LED filament is rated for up to 40,000 hours of use.

In addition the new design is bridging a psychological gap that keeps people buying inefficient bulbs because they prefer the traditional look that Edison had started.

Two good reasons why Panasonic’s light bulb won the prize, which is hopefully pushing production.

Venti anni fa, mentre lavoravo nell'azienda di famiglia - eravamo produttori italiani di componenti metallici per illuminazione - ho iniziato una campagna promozionale di nuovi elementi, chiamata RITORNO AL FUTURO: coni in alluminio di diverse forme e dimensioni, realizzati con vecchi utensili in legno dei primi anni '60, per torni manuali che si trovavano nella "soffitta" della nostra azienda. La campagna pubblicitaria ebbe un grande successo: riproducemmo alcuni utensili in acciaio inox,realizzammo migliaia di pezzi su un tornio completamente AUTOMATICO e li vendemmo in tutto il mondo.

Questa lampadina a LED di Panasonic mi ha ricordato questo fortunato episodio: la tecnologia del futuro in un corpo molto tradizionale. Mi piace.! Panasonic ha vinto il Good Design Award 2011 per questa nuova lampadina LED.Ha soli 4,4 watt di potenza e il filamento LED è valutato per un massimo di 40.000 ore di utilizzo.Inoltre, il nuovo design vorrebbe forse poter colmare il vuoto psicologico delle persone che continuano ad acquistare lampadine inefficienti per via del loro aspetto tradizionale che Edison aveva disegnato.Due buone ragioni per vincere il premio, che si spera avvierà la produzione. Prezzi e disponibilità non sono ancora stati resi pubblici.

LIGHT ART IN ITALY 2011

Il nuovo libro di Gisella Gellini con le installazioni temporanee di light art realizzate in Italia nel 2011, con testi di Fiorenzo Alfieri, Gianni Forcolini, Giuseppina Panza e Lorenzo Respi, sarà presentato alle ore 18.30, il prossimo 22 marzo, al book store Skira della Triennale di Milano.

La quarta edizione di Light Art in Italy 2011 (Maggioli Editore), è dedicata a Marinellia Pirelli, scomparsa nel 2009.

Gisella Gellini's new book about temporary lighting installations made in Italy in 2011, with texts written by  Fiorenzo Alfieri, Gianni Forcolini, Giuseppina Panza and Lorenzo Respi, will be presented at Skira bookstore, Triennale di Milano on 22nd March at 6.30 pm.
