La Lampada Annuale - The Lamp switching on for 11 secs yearly

Alighiero Boetti - “Lampada Annuale” | 1966
Varnished wood, electrical accessories, metal and glas
private Collection

Boetti's Lampada Annuale is a masterpiece of ARTE POVERA movement, founded by Boetti himself together with a group of artists, thinking that ART must be deeply metabolized and it can't just satisfy yr  senses and move the emotions. The movement ended  in 1972 after a few years of artistic activity. ARTE POVERA is mainly CONCEPT ART. Specifically this lamp switches on  for just 11 secs random every year. The artist doesn't want to express the fact but the idea of the fact itself. Pure concept. I found it extraordinary !

Puro concetto. Che trovo straordinario!

My Muse

Lalka dolls in a Maryann Roy's diorama

My Muse is a magazine about fashion dolls and their little world. Pamela De Lorenzi is one of the founders and I wanted to interview her because of our common passion for dolls and her great talent for photography. A good picture depends a lot on the use of light and this is the aspect I am most interested in. With her degree in Fashion Design and a professional experience with the photographic studio co-operating with Mattel, Pamela could achieve great results, which can be seen in her magazine My Muse. Here’s an extract of my interview to her :
1.How do you enlighten a doll in order to give her a human aspect?
Well, a doll is enlightened like any other object. The touch of the photographer is then essential for making her human.

2.In My Muse last December 2011 issue, in the photo album dedicated to VINTAGE, you have been able to create perfectly that typical atmosphere of the late ‘50s…why did you chose that particular soft pink colour?
I tried to give a natural effect and let the light coming in from outside in order to create that typical vintage atmosphere, perfect for the furniture set and the dolls I had available. I have not made any color correction in the pictures; the pink atmosphere is given by the light bounces on the various pieces of the set.

3. How much important is the light in yr shots?
I should say it is very important together with an excellent semi professional camera. Also the compact cameras can be good enough. But they are almost fully automatic and they allow less experiments.

Red MOD Mood

A friend of mine posted this wonderful shot on a social network and I promptly took it for sharing with all my readers!  It's an explosion of vibrancy!
From the end of the Sixties to the mid-Seventies the chemical company Bayer rented a pleasure boat during every Cologne furniture fair and had it transformed into a temporary showroom by a well-known contemporary designer. The main aim was to promote various synthetics products in connection with home furnishings. Verner Panton was commissioned no less than twice to design this exhibition, entitled 'Visiona'. The 1970 'Visiona 2' exhibition showed the Fantasy Landscape which was created in this environment. The resulting room installation consisting of vibrant colours and organic forms is one of the principal highlights of Panton's work. In terms of design history this installation is regarded as one of the major spatial designs of the second half of the twentieth century. Many of the lighting, furniture wall coverings and textiles where adapted for full production releases later.

What you can do with marble

I have never liked this time of the year...when you wake up in the morning , it's still dark ; you go out and it's too cold...rainy, snowy...everything's frozen...so is my creativity right now...Well, I want, in any case, to remain positive and identify this period with the work of some students of Bolzano University, led by Claudio Larcher,Simone Simonelli and Carmelo Marabello. They have made the drawings, the projects and finally the prototypes and the pieces, using marble and highlighting its versatility. The results can be a beautiful lamp ( as above), even shoes and many other items! They have then combined the marble ( the one used comes from Lasa, Val Venosta) with other materials like wood, rubber, wool, fabrics.
A great way to make marble less cold  and use it differently. They could "unfrozen" the marble...let's see if I can do the same for myself..
