This project " The Weight of Light" by Marina Bychkova - a worldwide famous doll artist - well represents my passions : Lighting and Dolls! Both have accompanied me till today and have given me great opportunities to grow professionally and personally, meeting wonderful people.I wish for myself and for you all that all our desires come true in 2012. Il progetto " The Weight of Light" di Marina Bychkova - famosissima artista, nota per le sue splendide bambole,nonché gioielli, abiti ed accessori per loro - ben rappresenta le mie due passioni : la Luce e le Bambole ! Entrambi mi hanno accompagnato sino ad oggi e mi hanno dato grandi opportunità di crescita professionale e personale, con l'incontro di persone fantastiche. With Flylight, this young couple of designers - STUDIO DRIFT Netherland- intends to react to digital revolution, making products which can give you the perception of non- material sensations..But digital world is also difficult to capture... is something non-material..virtual. It depends then on the use/abuse of it. We can't escape new technologies, new ways of communicating. Let's say that more than a reaction to digital era, this lighting well represents, to me, a production of our time : a perception of ethereal, uncertainty, vanity, superficiality, lack of substance.

Con Flylight, questa giovane coppia di designer - STUDIO DRIFT Netherland- intende reagire alla rivoluzione digitale, creando prodotti che diano la percezione di sensazioni immateriali .. Ma anche il mondo digitale è  difficile da catturare ... anch'esso è non materiale, virtuale. Dipende poi dall'uso / abuso che se ne fa. Non possiamo sfuggire alle nuove tecnologie, ai nuovi modi di comunicare. Diciamo che più che una reazione all' era digitale, questa illuminazione ben rappresenta, per me, il tempo in cui viviamo: una percezione di etereo,incertezza, vanità, superficialità, mancanza di sostanza.

Moss Table : a visionary solution from Mother Nature.

Moss Table was unveiled just this September at the London Furniture Festival and showcases an emerging technology called biophotovoltaics (BPV) that uses the natural process of photosynthesis to generate electrical energy.

Carlos Peralta, one of the inventors, from Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing said :"The moss table provides us with a vision of the future. It suggests a world in which self-sustaining organic-synthetic hybrid objects surround us, and supply us with our daily needs in a clean and environmentally friendly manner."

Scaffold Lighting

The Scaffold Light by Lanzavecchia + Wai

Although the concept, the design and the use of the materials are not actually new ( I used to work on a similar project three, four years back with a client but unfortunately the project didn't take off probably due to the high price of the fabrics or the difficulty in finding it), I do like the co-operation, the efforts, the story and the achievements of this young couple of designers Lanzavecchia + Wai! This Scaffold Lighting appears a mix 'n match of both cultures and traditions, which is one of  this young couple's aims : iron structures production is still popular in Italy and some of the lamp shades remind me of the far east shapes ( see picture below of the BELL SHADE, made in India by INDODAN LAMPSHADES).

Anche se il concetto, il design e l'uso dei materiali non sono, in realtà, nuovi (ho lavorato su un progetto simile tre, quattro anni fa con un cliente, ma purtroppo il progetto non è decollato probabilmente a causa del prezzo elevato del tessuto o la difficoltà a reperirlo), mi piacciono la cooperazione, gli sforzi, la storia e le conquiste di questa giovane coppia di designer Lanzavecchia + Wai! Questa SCAFFOLD LIGHTING sembra corrispondere ad un mix di entrambe le culture e tradizioni, che è uno degli obiettivi di questa giovane coppia : la produzione di strutture in ferro è ancora popolare in Italia e alcuni dei paralumi mi ricordano le forme del lontano oriente (vedi foto sopra di SHADE BELL, realizzati in India da INDODAN LAMPSHADES).

Ekò : the recycled bulb

I find very interesting today talking about Ekò, a recycled bulb by wivagroup. First step in the recycling process is recovering the most polluting materials such as phosphorus and mercury. Afterwards the regeneration is completed with the rest of materials such as glass,plastic,metals etc. All these will be re-used for producing the new bulb Ekò. Briefly, this bulb not only decreases the polluting capability of low energy sources, but also solves the problem of their waste and the necessity to stock it due to its uselessness. All this doesn't penalize the quality standards,helping our health and the sake of our environment.

Vorrei introdurre oggi la lampadina riciclata Ekò della Wivagroup. Primo passo del processo di riciclo è il recupero dei materiali altamente inquinanti come i fosfori ed il mercurio. Successivamente la rigenerazione si completa con i restanti materiali quali il vetro,la plastica, i metalli etc. Tutti questi verranno riutilizzati per la produzione della nuova lampadina.In breve, questo prodotto non solo dimezza la potenzialità inquinante delle sorgenti a basso consumo, ma risolve anche il problema del loro smaltimento, la necessità di stoccarlo perché non adoperabile. Tutto ciò però non penalizza la qualità del prodotto ed aiuta a salvaguardare la nostra salute ed il nostro ambiente.

Well.., maybe not the best design ever seen for a lamp, but for sure very corageous. The idea is to save a piece of wood and re-use it, re-thinking it under a new light.And the result is actually...a new light! I'd add  this awesome lamp in my recycling luminous objects's collection.

Magari non è il miglior design mai visto per una lampada, ma sicuramente molto coraggioso. L'idea è di salvare un pezzo di legno per riutilizzarlo, ripensandolo sotto una nuova luce. Ed in effetti il risultato.. è una nuova luce! Aggiungerei questa meravigliosa lampada nella mia raccolta di oggetti luminosi fatti con materiali riciclati.

Kaws: supporting a very talented street Artist

 Famed street artist KAWS has 1000 limited-edition sets of light bulbs available at the Standard Hotel. Each set includes three 3-watt bulbs — red, purple, and green — that feature KAWS’ signature double-X design.

Cocoon

Ango Lighting Design

I already posted a similar COCOON floor lamp a few weeks ago ( see my post The year of the Yong) : a prototype made in sylicon by an asian student.This time, once again, the Cocoon appears at the trade fair  Maison&Objet in Paris. Apart from its shape,concept and material's development  about which Isabelle Doal talks in detail, what impresses me is the fact that two so different persons - a student and a famous designer - have thought about a COCOON as a very innovative shape! The cocoon is the symbol of a new life and at the same time of the return to extreme simplicity. What I also find amazing is that both are of asiatic origins :  influenced by their own eastern traditions, a protest against the globalization and westernization of their too crowded asian cities or willing to return to a much simpler and more natural life?

Ho già scritto qualche settimana fa un post su una lampada da terra a forma di bozzolo ( si veda il mio articolo The Year of the Yong) : un prototipo in silicone, fatto da uno studente. Ancora una volta la forma a bozzolo riappare durante la fiera Maison&Objet a Parigi. A parte la sua forma, il concetto e lo sviluppo dei materiali, sui quali Isabelle Doal ci dà ampiamente delucidazioni,ciò che mi ha colpito é il fatto che due persone così differenti - uno studente ed un designer - abbiano entrambi pensato al bozzolo come ad una forma innovativa! Il bozzolo é simbolo di nuova vita ed allo stesso tempo di un ritorno ad una estrema semplicità. Ciò che trovo oltremodo sorprendente é che entrambi sono di origine asiatica : influenzati dalle loro tradizioni orientali, una protesta contro la globalizzazione e occidentalizzazione delle loro caotiche città asiatiche o desiderio di ritornare ad una vita più semplice e naturale?

Futurist Pylons

Nuovi pali della luce dai progetti di sei finalisti del concorso "Pylon for the future",durante il London design festival al Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra fino al 5 ottobre. Gli attuali piloni della corrente elettrica potrebbero essere rimpiazzati dai nuovi a favore di un minore impatto con l'ambiente.

In my imagination Asian countries are still those lands full of spirituality and ancient rituals..but of course they are not! And even the most remote ones now appear like the Seoul Square Media Canvas above. Amazing, chaotic,lively but globalized!

Enlightened Coatrack



TABARD by Pallucco




 Illuminated coat rack with a completely new function and contemporary look. Conceived by industrial designer Denis Santachiara for the Italian lighting company Pallucco, Tabard (a short overcoat worn by knights) subtly recalls Europe's days of monarchs and maidens with irony and light. The rigid shell covers a traditional coat rack, protecting the garments while emitting a substantial amount of light.

Appendiabiti illuminato con una funzione completamente nuova ed un look contemporaneo. Concepito dal designer industriale Denis Santachiara per l'azienda italiana di illuminazione Pallucco, Tabard (un cappotto corto indossato dai cavalieri) ricorda sottilmente il tempo di monarchi e fanciulle dell'Europa medievale con ironia e leggerezza. La scocca rigida copre un portabiti tradizionale, proteggendo i capi  dalla notevole quantità di luce emessa.

For fetish lovers only!

I'd like to celebrate my hundredth post dedicating it to fetish lovers! Both are made by Rebecca Johnson and the table lamp is, in my opinion, spectacular! It's what a fetish lover expects from a fetish lamp!

These two lamps were exhibited at " Furniture fetish" last August in Hollywood at Antebellum Gallery by Rick Castro - promoting and showcasing erotic and fetish culture.

An idea which keeps a living connection between the humans and technology.

Lampada o Porcospino ?

Is it a lamp or a porcupine ? Designed by Daisuke Hiraiwa, each one is created by gluing hundreds of toothpicks together. 

To create his stunning toothpick pendant lamps, Daisuke arranges hundreds of toothpicks together and he paints over the ends with a flexible Japanese glue.

Although they’re not technically recycled toothpicks and the use of glue isn’t at all eco friendly, we were struck by the Stamen chandeliers’ innovative use of everyday material. Just be sure to hang them away from eye level!

Anche se non sono stuzzicadenti riciclati  ( per fortuna..) e l'uso della colla non é proprio eco sostenibile, ci colpisce l'utilizzo originale di articoli di uso quotidiano. Basta assicurarsi che stiano lontano dagli occhi !

The year of the YONG

Wei- Chih Chu's prototype COCOON

A couple of days ago I received the prototype's pic of a floor lamp, designed by my friend Wei-Chih Chu, a young student , whom I have already spoken about in a previous post and whose creativity is amazing and goes beyond the expectations! Meanwhile I was receiving the ad of SFORZIN ILLUMINAZIONE latest lighting fixture...if you look and compare them, don't you find any resemblance? Both don't know each other..so..if we want to find a hidden meaning on this common shape, we could certainly say that both want to represent a NEW BORN, new expectations, new hopes, new concepts! An ERA change.!

Actually Wei-Chih Chu called his creation YONG, whose meaning is Cocoon, breeding the new life. And a new life means light or brightness.

The prototype has been made of silicone and the SFORZIN ILLUMINAZIONE lamp is made of  WHITE OPAL GLASS.

SFORZIN ILLUMINAZIONE

Qualche giorno fa ho ricevuto la foto di un prototipo di lampada da terra, disegnata dal mio amico Wei- Chih Chu, un giovane studente del quale ho già parlato in un post precedente, dalla creatività soprendente e che va oltre le aspettative.Nel frattempo ricevevo la pubblicità di una nuova lampada di SFORZIN ILLUMINAZIONE...se le guardate e le paragonate..non ci vedete delle somiglianze? Entrambi non si conoscono..se vogliamo dare un significato a questa forma comune, potremmo certo dire che entrambi hanno cercato di dare l'idea del NUOVO NATO, di nuove aspettative, nuove speranze, nuovi concetti! Un cambiamento di era! 

E infatti Wei- Chiu Chu ha chiamato la sua opera YONG, il cui significato é BOZZOLO, che genera nuova vita. Nuova vita vuol dire luce o luminosità. Il prototipo é stato fatto in silicone, la lampada di SFORZIN ILLUMINAZIONE in vetro opaco bianco.

Design is : "No Limits"

During Euroluce, at SALONE SATELLITE, this year I met a product design student, Wei-Chih, Chiu, from FH Aachen in Germany.

He presented his sculpture, which represents the designer work.

With his creation he wants to show the meaning of "the design process".The different size discs mean the different design elements:  they could be the style, material or forms etc.
In the creative design process we need to choose even to find out them.
Finally elements will be combined to create or design a subject.The sculpture could be bigger, or could be another form. There are many possibility...because design is " No Limits ", to say it in his own words.

Durante Euroluce di quest'anno al SALONE SATELLITE, ho incontrato uno studente di product design della scuola superiore FH di Aachen in Germania.

Ha presentato la sua scultura, la quale intende rappresentare il lavoro del designer. Con questa opera l'autore vuole dare una forma al significato del processo del design. I dischi di diverse misure stanno a significare i diversi elementi del design : possono essere lo stile, il materiale o le forme etc. Durante il processo creativo del design noi scegliamo , anzi andiamo alla ricerca di questi elementi. Alla fine gli elementi si combinano per creare o modellare un soggetto. La scultura può essere più grande o di altre forme.Ci sono infinite possibilità perché il design è " senza confini", per dirla con le parole dell'autore.

When I first bumped into Katerina Smutna FLICKR site, I fell in love with her creations at first sight ! A mix of charming, antique and polychrome allure makes her lighting fixtures extraordinary and unique.I was so curious about her and her products that I asked her for an interview.

1.When have you started your collection?

" I started to work with the wire around seven years ago – I always liked objects braided with wire – old bottles, ceramic mugs. I bought a booklet with instructions for basic procedures, I learned to decorate bottles with wire and make a simple basket. Since then I have developed my work - but no longer from books, but only by my imagination. Wire itself leads me as the material to its capacity."

2.What inspired you for starting to make your own products?

To the greater development led me the fact that I accidentally discovered Czech server where various creators sell their hand made products. I offered few things that I had at home and when after about a month sold them all, I made more products. When I gradually discovered that my things have their own customers, I arranged the entire agenda in order to do this craft professionally. Making what I'm doing now is just a logical outcome of all my work which constantly evolves and moves on. The lamps I have been making for about a year, although the idea of creating them is a little older. I do not like to rush things, I rather have everything to run its course.

3.What is the reason for using iron wire and Czech glass for decoration?

I use the iron wire because it is cheap and easy to get. I learned to work with it, it listens to me. I like how it looks, it has a unique patina, it is raw and stands out in contrast with glass beads from regional manufacturers. It is impressing for me that everything is "Made in Czech Republic', I like the fact that I support the local producers by buying the material from them.

4.What is your best seller ?

My favorite craftsmen that I had the opportunity to see, although only virtually, are following: Ruth Jensen www.etsy.com/people/sparkflight, who produces magical animals, jewelry and many other objects. From the Czech producers I like Merva Martina http://www.fler.cz/mervam. Regarding the lamps, my biggest favorite is Juro Vyboh R.E.P.A. repasopa.com/ - it is a boy, who also manufactures lamps from recycled PET bottles and other interesting objects. I recommend viewing galleries of all above mentioned artists.

5.Will you present your collection to some exhibition or event?

I present all my work mainly on network. Usually once a year I have a small exhibition in the neighborhood, attend to one or two craft markets, arrange one course. Presentation and selling my work on the internet suits me perfectly as it is easy on regular maintenance, I can sit down to my pc whenever I want, therefore I have time to devote to children, family and to work according to my discretion. I like that I am not tied to fixed working hours. Most of my things are created at night when the whole house is asleep and I have the time to work in peace and quiet.

FASHIONCAMP 10-11 JUNE 2011 : unconference and...unlighting

An idea by STUDIO MAMMINI CANDIDO - Lights by FDV group

I attended the second edition of FASHION CAMP 2011 in Milano, an event about fashion, new tendencies, creativity, art, workshops, (un)conferences. In a word, everything related to the fashion world in a very informal way. Even the location SPAZIO EX ANSALDO looks very much informal.

And even at this event I was so lucky to find ...a lighting fixture! Unfortunately I couldn't meet the creator, but I am ready to give him full credit, in case he/she or someone else is ready to give me his/her name!

Ho partecipato alla seconda edizione del FASHIONCAMP 2011 a Milano, un evento sulla moda, nuove tendenze, creatività, arte, laboratori, (non)conferenze. In poche parole tutto ciò che riguarda il mondo della moda in modo molto informale.Anche il luogo SPAZIO EX ANSALDO é molto informale. Ed anche a questo evento ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare... un lampadario! Sfortunatamente non so chi sia il creatore, ma sono pronta a dargli/le il giusto credito, nel caso lui/lei o qualcun'altro mi dia il suo nome!

Un progetto itinerante, un percorso di formazione con l’obiettivo di coinvolgere e sensibilizzare tutti gli operatori sui temi della razionalizzazione dell’energia e sul concetto di efficienza energetica, attraverso le nuove tecnologie. Il percorso dei tre convegni culminerà a

all’interno di E.Tech Experience, la manifestazione internazionale di Fiera Milano dedicata a energia, impiantistica elettrica e illuminazione, che si svolgerà
dal 16 al 19 novembre prossimi, durante la quale si tireranno le fila del lavoro fatto sul territorio e si valuterà come meglio formalizzare sollecitazioni e istanze che ne saranno emerse.

The final location of the conventions, held in Bologna, Rome, Naples and Turin, will be in Milano during E.Tech Experience, the international fair totally dedicated to energy, electrical appliances and lighting from 16th to 19th november 2011.

Boldini e La Belle Epoque : how blushstrokes can give light

During my visit at the exhibition Boldini e la Belle Epoque in Como at Villa Olmo from 26th March to 24th july 2011, I have been impressed by two paintings of Giuseppe de Nittis, IL SALOTTO DELLA PRINCIPESSA MATILDE 1883 (Barletta Pinacoteca comunale), of which you can watch the video and PENSIEROSA 1879 ( Collezione Privata Courtesy Galleria Berman,TO). Although De Nittis had never been a member of the MACCHIAOLI artistic movement, the light in his paintings seems more influenced by it than by IMPRESSIONISM, which he belonged to. I find extremely amazing how he and also other painters of the same period succeed in illuminating their paintings, creating the light just with clear blushstrokes and giving that unmistakable touch.

Durante la mia visita alla mostra su Boldini e la Belle Epoque a villa Olmo, Como, dal 26 marzo al 24 luglio 2011, sono rimasta colpita da due opere di Giuseppe de Nittis, IL SALOTTO DELLA PRINCIPESSA MATILDE 1883 ( barletta Pinacoteca comunale) della quale potete guardare il video e PENSIEROSA 1879 ( Collezione Privata Courtesy Galleria Berman, TO). Nonostante De Nittis non appartenesse al movimento artistico dei MACCHIAIOLI, questi sembrano influenzare il modo di illuminare i  suoi dipinti  più che l'IMPRESSIONISMO,di cui fece parte. Trovo molto interessante come lui ed altri pittori dello stesso periodo rendano l'illuminazione nei loro dipinti, creando la luce semplicemente con pennellate di colori chiari e dando alle opere quell'inconfondibile tocco.
